In 2010, I marched in the National Day Parade as a national serviceman.

Months of drills, aching legs, and sunburnt skin built up to those few minutes when the nation moved as one.

At 19, I thought patriotism was spectacle, fireworks over Marina Bay, perfect uniforms in perfect rows, and the polished rhythm of ceremony.

Now, at SG60, I know it is also the unseen.

It is living authentically in a society still learning how to understand queer and gender-fluid people like me.

It is raising my neurodiverse daughter here and teaching her that difference is a source of strength, not something to hide.

It is absorbing the stares and comments as a transgender person and choosing not to disappear.

This year, Singapore celebrates with concerts, art trails, and vouchers, but my hope is for a gift we cannot put in a redemption portal.

I long for a future where belonging is not conditional, where bathrooms are safe for everyone, and where leadership, media, and community reflect the full spectrum of who we are.

Love for country is being honest enough to see what is missing and committed enough to keep building it.
